Afrihost to Launch Pure 5G Packages
The introduction of Pure 5G unlimited packages that will run on MTN’s 5G network has been announced by internet service provider, Afrihost. Three month-to-month options, each delivering up to 50Mbps, 100Mbps, or unconstrained speeds, will be offered at launch, according to Afrihost, which spoke with MyBroadband. Following are the prices for these packages: R749 per month for 50 Mbps, R849 for 100 Mbps, and R949 for unlimited.
There will be a 1TB fair usage policy (FUP) for all of Afrihost’s Pure 5G offerings per month. After using 1TB, the user’s connection speed will be reduced to 1Mbps for the remainder of the month. The “Unlimited” service from Afrihost does not mention the highest speed that might be achieved, but according to MTN’s most recent 5G marketing materials, download rates of up to 500Mbps and upload speeds of up to 50Mbps are achievable with its fixed-5G products.
These speeds, nevertheless, are based on a subscriber’s proximity to the 5G site and the number of other users using the tower’s bandwidth. According to a recent Analytico assessment using data from the MyBroadband Speed Test app gathered during 2022, MTN has the greatest 5G network in South Africa. MTN achieved average throughputs of 233.32 Mbps for downloads, 41.16 Mbps for uploads, and a latency of 27 ms.
Customers who own one of the Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2 or ZTE 5G CPE MC801A, MTN’s two authorized 5G routers, may purchase a SIM-only bundle. South Africa still has a difficult time finding 5G routers, and they are typically pricey.
For a one-time fee of R2,499, Afrihost will combine the 50Mbps and 100Mbps subscriptions with a ZTE MC801A router for individuals without a device.
Customers who choose the Unlimited plan will receive a ZTE MC801A router as a free addition to their order. Customers who purchase a SIM + Device package and decide to terminate their subscription less than six months after signing up will be charged a R999 cancellation fee. Beginning on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, the packages will be accessible on the Afrihost website.
