Kenyan electric mobility startup Roam has introduced the Generation 2 Roam Air, an upgraded electric motorcycle developed with direct input from boda boda riders.

The Generation 2 Roam Air arrives with more than 40 enhancements, following rigorous field testing across both urban and rural terrains. Built entirely by Roam’s in-house engineering team, the new model represents a deepened focus on local manufacturing and user-centered design.

“We reimagined this bike with the riders who rely on it daily,” said Monicah Mwalo, Roam’s Production Manager. “This is a machine built for Kenyan roads, by Kenyan hands.”

Roam’s redesign is aimed squarely at improving economic efficiency and durability for this workforce. Weighing one kilogram less than the original, the new version offers improved battery range and handling. Its reinforced frame now carries up to 240 kilograms, an upgrade designed to meet the physical demands of everyday transport on Kenyan roads.

Roam also responded to rider concerns about security and maintenance. The battery system now includes a single-door lockable compartment, reducing the risk of theft and streamlining battery swaps. Mechanical and electrical upgrades include simplified wiring, advanced lighting, and weather-resistant components to better handle the region’s harsh conditions.

Crucially, Roam has increased the use of domestically manufactured components to 36 percent. This includes wire harnesses, body panels, connectors, and other key parts part of a broader strategy to reduce production costs, create jobs, and support Kenya’s clean-tech industry.

Early adopters have already seen real impact. “I used to spend most of my earnings on fuel and repairs,” said Nairobi rider Joel Amboka. “Now, I charge at home for under $2 and ride the whole day. It’s changed how I work.”

This latest model reflects the company's efforts to deliver practical, locally adapted EV solutions to a growing market.
