The United Arab Emirates has approved a 10-year license for Elon Musk’s Starlink to provide satellite internet and communications services in the country.
The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) said the license allows Starlink Satellite Communications to operate a public satellite communications network and provide connectivity services across the UAE.
“This license represents a significant addition to the UAE’s telecommunications sector and reflects the country’s commitment to adopting advanced technologies and fostering a flexible regulatory environment that supports innovation and investment.” – Majed Sultan Al Mesmar, Director-General of TDRA.
According to the regulator, the approval covers satellite broadband services as well as connectivity for the aviation and maritime sectors.
Starlink’s entry will add satellite connectivity to the UAE’s existing fiber and 5G networks, giving businesses and public institutions another option for internet access and backup connectivity.
For African and Black-owned businesses, the UAE approval offers another signal of where the connectivity market is heading. Wider satellite deployment could create opportunities for startups providing internet access, logistics, cloud services and digital tools in underserved markets.
It could also increase pressure on African telecom operators to improve coverage, reliability and pricing as satellite providers expand across emerging markets.
