Capitec Launches Capitec Connect to Provide Data that Doesn’t Expire
Capitec is the most recent South African bank to introduce a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), and it promises data at low prices. The bank stated on Monday that it plans to “disrupt the prepaid industry” with a “simplified prepaid solution for phone, data, and SMS.” The bank is launching the MVNO, branded Capitec Connect, using Cell C’s enabling infrastructure.
Capitec is challenging the norms for prepaid mobile data and airtime, the bank claimed in a statement, just as they did when they first entered the banking industry.
Capitec Connect proposes to charge R4.50 for every 100MB of data, or R45 for every GB. This is allegedly 50% less expensive than the “usual market pricing” on average. Regardless of how much a customer purchases, the rate is constant. Importantly, the data is always valid, provided the Capitec Connect Sim is used at least one every six months.
The chief executive of Capitec, Gerrie Fourie, stated that South Africans have been griping about the price of data, it’s pricy and challenging. However, Capitec Connect provides a mobile solution that is simpler to understand, much more affordable and can be recharged easily.
“South Africans have been complaining about the cost of data. It’s expensive and complicated. Bundle pricing, off-peak and peak rates, and the fact that your data expired are all things that make no sense.
“We’re changing this by giving our clients access to a mobile solution that is simpler to understand, much more affordable and can be recharged easily on our digital channels.”
The prepaid solution, a partnership with Cell C, seeks to bring digital inclusivity. “Our vision is to bring connectivity to all. We want to help create opportunity for everyone to be able to connect with access to affordable data and digital banking anywhere, anytime,” said Fourie.
“It is through partnerships such as the one between Capitec and Cell C that we can make a major difference in bridging the digital divide that still exists in our country, and we’re very pleased to be part of the solution that enables South Africans to access a digital lifestyle that can truly change their world,” said Cell C chief executive officer, Douglas Craigie Stevenson.
All Capitec branches offer SIM cards, and customers can attach up to five SIMs to their profile in order to provide family members with access to data and airtime.
The Capitec banking app, a short code, or Internet banking can all be used to top off the Sim after it has been enabled. These services include data, minutes, SMS, and airtime. SMSs cost 25c, while calls are charged at 90c/minute. As long as the Sim is used once every six months, airtime never runs out.
