Pan-African payments company PawaPay has secured a Payment Service Provider (PSP) license from the Bank of Mozambique, allowing it to onboard merchants directly and provide regulated payment services in the country.
The approval was granted through its local subsidiary, Quidexplus Mozambique, making PawaPay one of the first companies licensed to operate as a PSP in Mozambique. Merchant onboarding is expected to begin in the coming days.
According to PawaPay, Mozambique has more than 12 million active mobile money accounts across M-Pesa, operated by Vodacom, E-Mola by Movitel, and mKesh by Tmcel.
The company connects businesses to mobile money networks, enabling them to collect and disburse payments.
For businesses operating in Mozambique, the license could provide a regulated route to digital payment services and access to customers using mobile money. Easier connections to payment networks could also help businesses manage collections and payouts as they expand their operations.
